It is becoming a difficult issue to be evasive about branding. We live, eat and drink brands. Some one has said that brands constitute the organizing mechanism that helps us navigate through each day. We are all branded even though we may not want to agree with that. Brand perceptions are result of mixed stimuli of interactions that an individual has with a given brand. This fact accounts for why brand managers as well as activators must work hard to ensure that the perceptions of various stimuli are resonating with brand’s character, behavior among others.

Brand activation demands that brand managers intensely ignite the passion of a big idea that customer will appreciate in all the processes. Effort must be made to connect the brand emotionally with the clients who eventually ‘owned’ the brand. Brand managers need to create strong believe in the offering through all the stages of brand activation. Brand experiences by the consumers must also create a deep relationship through education, interaction, motivation as well as communication that builds closer rapport.
Brand activation process must evolve and be able to change with time or remain in the present tense as a friend once asserted. Brand activation that will work must listen to and study the client’s preferences per time, the influencing factors in their decision making process.

A great brand activation effort must support, encourages customer awareness of the brand, good knowledge of the brand, promote liking, conviction and eventual purchase and re-purchase. I am also convinced that brand activation process must begin with what the brand stands for and proper identification of who the audience is. Brand activation process must show vividly the step by step guide on what to do at any point in time. It should guide the brand’s communication channels, designs, creativity among many other vital indices. Brand activation is an expression of how a brand will approach brand management activities from within the organization. Be sure that as brand manager, one is looking deeper behind every possibility in the brand and find out vital assets that have relevant consequences for the entire organization or brand. Brand position must be clearly elucidated. Brand activation that is wholly controlled by external consultants is bound to fail because the employees are major actors in making brand activation process successful.

Great brand activation meets with customers demand and challenges. Let me conclude today by saying that when brand activation is done right, the followings can be an advantage.

Microsoft Yahoo Search Marketing Deal

There’s been lot of buzz around new Microsoft-Yahoo Search Marketing Deal. Deal is making waves in digital industry. As experts are saying, it is move to counter the search giant called Google. Both, Microsoft & Yahoo, are touting it a great move to break the monopoly of Google and offer users a better search experience.

I have another angle to talk on this deal.  Here are my points:

1. Google remains top of mind of almost every net user. In India, Google has more than 70% share of the search pie. Rest is all scattered between Yahoo, Microsoft and other players. How is this deal going to topple Google from users Top of Mind is something would be very interesting to see? I think, this will decide about the efficacy of this deal.
2. Let’s talk about User Experience. Both Yahoo n Bing, they don’t allow me to refine the search query whereas Google gives the user to refine their search results by using the Broad Match, Exact Match in search query etc .  Google also allows the users to search for something “within a particular site”. Something which is missing in Bing as of now.

Brands must stop defaulting to rational, commoditised tactics and instead communicate emotions to succeed in the business world
Often in business-to-consumer (B2C) marketing, large amounts of time and effort are placed on conveying the emotion of a brand, only for it to be lost by using generic promotions or tactics when trying to convert a sale.

But when it comes to business-to-business (B2B) brands, the reverse is usually true. Lots of time is spent on targeted and tactical marketing aimed at driving sales, without carefully considering how to create an emotional connection with the audience.
This division between brand marketing and sales marketing is a symptom of an industry where both client teams and agencies are structured into two distinct areas of responsibility. This division is unnatural and unhelpful, diluting brands and making sales less likely.

The most effective B2B marketing fuses the best of brand and commercial thinking and is built on an understanding of human behaviour – and brands that can engage on an emotional level (but also understand how to convert and nurture customers) will be successful in their B2B activity.
This combination of brand and commercial thinking can be termed “brand commerce” and it’s central to how approaching briefs and developing marketing solutions for clients.
Unsurprisingly, it tends to be startup digital brands that best understand that the emotion of the brand needs to be fused with commercial thinking and sit at the heart of the service they provide. When you buy one, you also get three months’ access to Evernote Premium, further creating a sense of exclusivity that will attract professionals to trial, use and embed the software in their working life. These sales nudges are commercial in nature, but never lose sight of the brand promise.

Even with the most technical and rational of products it’s important to understand the need for a point of engagement before you can have a real impact on sales. For example, KHWS has worked with a petro-chemical company to help bring emotion to the world of oil, encouraging sales staff to communicate the benefits to an often misinformed and unengaged audience.
By creating animated video episodes that use simple, engaging storytelling to spell out the benefits of using the right oil on commercial vehicles and machinery, the company has improved the sales journey, while reinforcing the premium positioning of the brand.

No matter the brand and the audience, you need to find a way of connecting with their lives, hopes and fears to tell your story and sell your benefits. So find the emotion in your brand and stop defaulting to rational, commoditised tactics, which might give short-term return, but won’t build market share over time.
